About Science
Science permeates our lives. Science and technology are involved in every aspect of our lives from the air we breathe, to the food we eat, to the medicines we take, to the devices we take for granted in our everyday lives. It is obvious then, that science is also important in the international job market. A good scientific education can open up many doors for students at LCI. From engineering to dentistry, or from cancer research to maintaining a national park, a large percentage of the jobs today require a background in science. At LCI our state of the art laboratories, knowledgeable teachers, and an encouraging atmosphere provide students with an opportunity to learn science inside and outside of the classroom. Our students perform excellently in some of the most competitive scientific contests, thanks to their efforts and the dedication of the members of the science department.

Science Grade 10, LD (SNC 2P1)
This course emphasizes reinforcing science-related knowledge and skills, including scientific inquiry, critical thinking, and the environmental impact of science and technology, to prepare students for success in everyday life, in the workplace, and in the grade 11 Science Workplace Preparation Course. Students explore a range of topics, including science in media, interactions of common materials, interdependence of organisms in communities and using electrical energy. Students will have the opportunity to extend mathematical and scientific process skills and to continue developing their skills in reading, writing and oral language through relevant and practical science activities.
Science Grade 11, Workplace (SNC 3E1)
This course provides students with the science-related knowledge and skills they need to help them make informed decisions in the workplace and their personal lives. Students will explore a wide range of topics including materials and safety, electrical circuits, microorganisms, the human immune system and defences against disease, and the impact of humans on the environment. Emphasis is placed on relating these topics directly to students' experience both in the world of work and in daily life.
Biology Grade 11, College (SBI 3C1)
This course focuses on the processes involved in biological systems and helps students refine skills related to scientific investigation. Students will learn concepts and theories as they conduct investigations in the areas of cellular biology, microbiology, animal anatomy and physiology, plant structure and physiology, and environmental science. Emphasis will be placed on the practical application of concepts, and on the skills needed for further study in various branches of life sciences and related fields.
Biology Grade 11, University (SBI 3U1)
This course furthers students' understanding of the processes involved in biological systems. Students will explore the basics of cell biology, genetics, mammalian systems, plant physiology and the diversity of living things. Practical work such as dissection, microbiology, and plant investigations will augment the understanding of theoretical concepts.
Chemistry Grade 11, University (SCH 3U1)
This course focuses on the concepts and theories that form the basis of modern chemistry. Students will study the behaviour of solids, liquids, gases, and solutions; and explore how chemistry is used in developing new products and processes that affect our lives and our environment. Practical work will provide a chance to develop skills required to plan and carry out investigations related to changes and relationships in chemical systems using laboratory equipment safely, effectively and accurately; using appropriate numeric, symbolic, graphical and linguistic modes of representation to communicate scientific ideas, plans, and experimental results. They will also learn to compile and interpret data and other information gathered from print, laboratory, and electronic sources. Emphasis will be placed on the importance of chemistry in other branches of science. Strong mathematical skills are essential for success in this course.
